In this letter, Foster rejected a tentative agreement with JS to meet in the presence of witnesses to resolve their differences. JS read Foster’s letter to the city council at its 8 June meeting during a discussion of JS’s failed attempt to reconcile with Foster on 7 June. (Letter from Robert D. Foster, ca. 7 June 1844; Minutes, 8 June 1844; see also JS, Journal, 7 June 1844.)
This blank space was presumably left so the text of Foster’s letter could be inserted into the council’s minutes. The published version of the city council minutes embedded Foster’s letter into the minutes from 8 June rather than at this point. (“For the Neighbor,” Nauvoo Neighbor, Extra, 17 June 1844, [1].)
