JS as Mayor, Praecipe, , Hancock Co., IL, to Circuit Court Clerk [], [, Hancock Co., IL], 10 May 1843, Babbitt v. W. Smith et al. (Hancock Co., IL, Circuit Court 1843); unidentified handwriting; signature of JS; one page; private possession; photocopy at Joseph Smith Papers.
The custodial history of this document is unknown. The verso of the photocopy in project possession contains notes in the handwriting of historian Dean C. Jessee stating that Jessee received a copy of the document from collector Dick Cardall in 1982. Cardall planned to purchase the document at that time from an unidentified seller, but there is no indication the purchase occurred. According to Jessee’s notes, the seller claimed to have obtained the original document from Church Historical Department employee Donald T. Schmidt in a document trade “some years ago.”
