City of December the 10th. 1844 <1843>
According to the request of the Several Wards in the city, the citizens resolved that they would petition to the City Council, that a police company— should be raised, and organised consisting of forty Men——
The City Council met and the petition grant<ed>, the ordinance passed that the police be under the Command or direction of the Mayor of the , at all times, &.c. and that be the Captain of the Police, or called the high Policeman.
"— The polic[e], was organized, on the 29th of Dec 1843_and Sworn into office in presence of the Mayor, and the City Council.
