This column designates the page in the Nauvoo City Council Minute Book where the council approved these expences.

At the 22 January 1842 Nauvoo city council meeting, a committee of ways and means was appointed. This committee was to meet on 28 January to, among other things, “ascertain the expences of the City for the Current Year.” James Sloan, as city recorder, was instructed to make a list of expenses granted by the city council to be ready for the 28 January meeting. The Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger notes that an order was given by the city on 6 January 1842 to pay John C. Bennett, the mayor, $100.00 for his salary for 1841. No pay order is extant. (Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger, 50.)

Alanson Ripley, the city surveyor, presented a claim to the Nauvoo City Council on 13 November 1841, which was allowed. A transaction for $38.50 ($32.00 plus $6.50) was recorded in the Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger on 7 January 1842. James Allred, the supervisor of streets, presented a claim to the Nauvoo City Council on 14 January 1842, which was allowed at the 15 January council meeting. Though the meeting minutes indicate a pay order was given, there is not an extant pay order, nor was this transaction recorded in the Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger. At the 22 January 1842 city council meeting, the council allowed Hyrum Smith to be paid $1.00 per day for use of his room, fuel, and candles for council meetings. A pay order for Hyrum Smith was written 11 June 1842 for the $12.00 allowed at the 22 January meeting, and the transaction was recorded in the Nauvoo City Treasury Ledger on 18 June 1842.
