<Monday> On the 17th day of June 1844 <at <about> 7 o’clock PM> Lieutenant General Joseph Smith issued orders to Col , then acting Major General of the , to call out the Legion in the absence of Brigadier General who <was at that time on a mission in the state of > who was the commanding officer of the Legion under Generl Smith after Major General had been cashiered as before mentioned, to call out the Legion in the best possible manner of for defence <at 8 o’clock next d[a]y at the > and also issued orders to <Col> commander of the Lt Genl Staff to assemble at his quarters forthwith immediately all of which was accordingly done,
<Tuesday> June 18th 8 o’clock A.M. the Legion assembled accordingly to the above order and was the line was formed at 9 o’C A.M. under , the first Cohort under the Command of , acting Brig Genl, and the second Cohort under acting Brig Gen— and after Lt Genl Smith took command the Legion by order of Genl Smith Marched to the and was addressed by Genl Smith for about one <&> half after which the Legion returned to their former ground & continued on duly through the day with a short intermission at noon After Genl Smith returned home he gave orders (to have no) communications <that receive his> only through his aids de camp, the proper channels; E. official channel
June 19 Wednesday, The Legion assembled as on yesterday Col then acting Briga Genereal 2[nd] Cohort afternoon & continued their organization and in the afternoon— Genl Smith gave orders to have a picket guard posted on all the roads [p. [10]]
