that the may have the privilege of shewing their Loyalty in the defence thereof.
We have the fullest confidence in the honor, Justice & integrity of Your & feel confidence that we have only to present our case before you to ensure protection, beliving that the cries of so many peaceable & patriotic citizens will not be disregarded by your .
We therefore ask you, as the chief magistrate of this , to grant us our requests, & we as in duty bound will ever pray.
Signed by the & the majority of the city Council, to wit, all who were present, unless , & also signed by about eight hundred or upwards of the Inhabitants. July 22d 1842

Dear since my return to I have discovered some interesting correspondence which I take the liberty of copying from the office books for your perusal, I will be responsible for any use you may choose to make of it & if you Judge it worthy of Public note I may steal more from time to time.

-[the female Petition & Gen Smiths letter both of which accompanied the forgoing are not within reach but those be forth coming at the earliest possible date]-
July 22 the Citizens of signed Petitions to (both male & female) for Protection from mob violence. which were presented by Gen & Mrs & others, together with. a communication from Gen Joseph Smith of the 25— July — to which gave the following reply.
