bargain, sell, convey and confirm unto the said David Martin his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract or parcel of land, situate and being in the county of in the State of , viz: being the North part of lot four, in Block one hundred and forty eight, containing forty feet on Main Street, running West one hundred and ninety eight feet, thence South forty feet, thence East one hundred and ninety eight feet to Main Street, said Lot being in the City of . Together with all and singular the appurtenances thereunto belonging, or in any wise appertaining. To have and to hold the above described premises unto the said David Martin his heirs and assigns forever. And the said and Lucy Ann his wife, their heirs and assigns, the aforesaid premises, unto the said David Martin his heirs and assigns, against the claim or claims of all and every person whomsoever, do and will warrant and forever defend by these presents. In testimony whereof, the said , and Lucy Ann his wife of the first part, have hereunto set their hands and seals, the day and year first above written.

I a Justice of the Peace in and for the City of , County and State aforesaid do certify that and Lucy Ann his wife, whose signatures appear to the foregoing Deed, and who are personally known to me to be the persons described in, and who executed the same, did severally acknowledge that they had executed the said conveyance, for the uses and purposes therein mentioned. And the said Lucy Ann Williams having been by me made acquainted with the contents of the said Deed, and examined separate and apart from her said , acknowledged that she had executed the same, and relinquished her dower to the premises therein conveyed, voluntarily, freely, and without compulsion of her said . In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand, and seal, at the City of , County of this 25th. day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and forty-four

This Indenture, made and entered into, this twenty fifth day of May in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and forty four, between and Polly Zerviah [Zeruah Kelsey Johnson] his wife, of the county of Hancock, and State of Illinois, of the one part, and David Martin, of the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, of the other part, Witnesseth, that the said and Polly Zerviah his wife, for and in consideration of the sum of six hundred and fifty dollars, to them in hand paid, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, do hereby grant, bargain, sell, convey and confirm unto the said David Martin his heirs and assigns forever, all that tract or parcel of land, situate and being in the county of Hancock, in the State of Illinois, viz: part of Lot No four Block one hundred and fifty bounded as follows, beginning sixty feet from the South West corner of said lot, and running thirty feet east in line of Water Street, thence North one hundred and two feet, thence West thirty [p. 173]
