Biography

24 Feb. 1824–27 Feb. 1878. Laborer, clerk, postmaster. Born in Co. Down, Ireland. Son of Henry McEwan and Jane Thompson. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Orson Pratt, Oct. 1840, in Edinburgh. Immigrated to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, fall 1843. Ordained an elder, 13 Feb. 1844, in Nauvoo. Served as clerk for JS in 1844. Served as ensign in Nauvoo Legion, 28 Sept. 1844. Served as clerk on Nauvoo temple recorder’s staff, by 1845. Served as secretary of Fourth Quorum of the Seventy in Nauvoo, Dec. 1845. Married Amanda Melvina Higbee, 23 Dec. 1845, in Nauvoo. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving 24 Sept. 1848. Moved to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by 10 Aug. 1852. Served in “Elk Mountain Mission” to Indians, 1855. Appointed brigade adjutant and quartermaster in militia, 20 Oct. 1855. Appointed clerk of Provo Quorum of Seventies, 10 Mar. 1856. Appointed deputy clerk of district court, 18 Mar. 1856. Served as Provo postmaster. Served as president of Twentieth Quorum of the Seventy. Died in Provo.
