Biography

27 July 1800–10 Sept. 1881. Painter, chain maker, clerk, tavern keeper, military officer. Born in New Haven Co., Connecticut. Moved to Jefferson, Ashtabula Co., Ohio, by 1825. Married Celia Hawley, 24 Feb. 1825, in Jefferson. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, 1838. Ran tavern in Augusta, Hancock Co. Captain of Augusta Dragoons. With company of men, met JS en route to Carthage, Hancock Co., with orders to retrieve state arms in possession of Nauvoo Legion, 24 June 1844. Moved to Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois, by 1850. Elected colonel of Quincy home guard regiment, 1862. Clerk for C. B. & Q. Railroad, 1873–1879. Moved to Decorah, Winneshiek Co., Iowa, 1881, where he died.
