Smith, Robert Frederick
Biography
2 Aug. 1806–25 Apr. 1893. Farmer, justice of the peace, military officer. Born in Philadelphia. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, 1833. Married Amanda Benton, 19 June 1834, in Philadelphia. Justice of the peace in Hancock Co. responsible for incarceration of JS and Hyrum Smith at Carthage, June 1844. Captain of Carthage Greys, the militia unit charged with protecting JS and Hyrum Smith when they were murdered in jail at Carthage, 27 June 1844. Wounded in Battle of Nauvoo, Sept. 1846. Appointed as commanding officer of Sixteenth Regiment Illinois Infantry, May 1861. Served in Civil War. Died in Hamilton, Hancock Co.
