Biography

27 Dec. 1810–23 Jan. 1891. Merchant, hotelier, farmer, postmaster, dairyman. Born in Tolland, Tolland Co., Connecticut. Son of Grant Lathrop and Sybel. Married first Cynthia Jackson. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 1836. Received elder’s certificate, 31 Mar. 1836, in Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio. Moved to Caldwell Co., Missouri, summer 1838. Moved to Livingston Co., Missouri, fall 1838. Wife died, ca. 1838–1839, in Missouri. Appointed member of Third Quorum of the Seventy, 6 May 1839, in Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. Moved to Lee Co., Iowa Territory, by 1840. Married second Jane Peacock, 22 July 1841, in Lee Co. Purchased store in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. Mar. 1845, and sold dry goods and groceries. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1847. Moved to El Dorado Co., California, by 1850, and operated a hotel. Moved to Chino Ranch, San Bernardino, San Bernardino Co., California, 1854; to San Clemente Island, near San Diego, ca. 1859; back to San Bernardino Co., by 1860; to San Timoteo, San Bernardino Co., by 1866; to San Salvador, San Bernardino Co., by 1870; to Temescal, San Bernardino Co., by 1880; and to Colton, San Bernardino Co., by 1886. Died in San Bernardino.
