Biography

24 Dec. 1814–23 Feb. 1888. Farmer, military officer. Born in St. Clair Co., Illinois. Son of James Dykes and Francis Culbertson. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by Nov. 1835. Married Dorcas Keeling, 1 Nov. 1835, in Edwards Co., Illinois. Moved to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, by Apr. 1837. Ordained an elder, by 7 Dec. 1837. Ordained a seventy, 12 May 1839. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1842. Served missions to Illinois, Indiana, and Tennessee, 1842–1844. Ordained a high priest, 14 Apr. 1844, in Nauvoo. Appointed as presiding officer of branch of church at Fox River Settlement, LaSalle Co., Illinois, 23 Oct. 1844. Member of Mormon Battalion. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, arriving Oct. 1847 with other members of Mormon Battalion. Served mission to England, Denmark, and Germany, 1849. Returned to Utah Territory, Oct. 1853. Moved to Auburn, Placer Co., California, ca. 1854. Moved to Dry Creek, Sacramento Co., California, by 1860. Became disaffected with church and joined Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, by 1863. Returned to Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by May 1875. Moved to Zenos (later Mesa), Maricopa Co., Arizona Territory, by 1880, where he died.
