Biography

1 Nov. 1798–10 Dec. 1881. Farmer, canal builder. Born at Herkimer, Herkimer Co., New York. Son of Friend Dayton and Anne Herrington. Married Permelia Bundy, 1 Nov. 1820. Moved to Parkman, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by JS, 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., 1834, where he was contracted to build a canal. Ordained an elder by JS, by 6 Jan. 1836. Appointed member of Second Quorum of the Seventy, 1836. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Moved to Daviess Co., Missouri, 1836; to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 1838; and to Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Appointed president of Twelfth Quorum of the Seventy, 1844, in Nauvoo. Appointed to serve mission to campaign for JS as candidate for U.S. president, Apr. 1844. Arrived in Salt Lake Valley, 27 Oct. 1849. Moved to Lake City, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by 1860. Moved to Cedar Fort, Utah Co., by 1870. Died at American Fork, Utah Co.
