Historical Introduction

In December 1841, JS, as the trustee for the , reassigned responsibility for receiving, recording, and distributing tithing donations from the to . In February 1842, joined Richards in working in the trustee’s, or tithing, office, and by September, Clayton was appointed as temple recorder in place of Richards.
In the capacity of temple recorder, and received tithing and donations given to the , then recorded these donations and distributed the donated goods and funds to various individuals or church organizations. The distribution of goods served as payment for those working in the trustee’s office, including JS as trustee, as well as those performing services for the church. The distributed goods were most frequently given to the to help fund construction efforts on the . When Richards and Clayton distributed goods to the temple committee, the clerks created invoices listing the goods changing hands. A loose copy of each invoice appears to have been created and given to the temple committee alongside the distributed goods. Few of the loose invoices given to the temple committee have survived. Two loose copies of Invoice No 31 are extant. Retained copies of the invoices were recorded by trustee office clerks in the Trustee Account Book and later in Trustee-in-Trust Ledger A.
The loose copy of each invoice and the corresponding copies recorded in the trustee record books are very similar. Each line of the invoice represents a donation and provides the date, the donated items or funds, the name of the donor, and the value of the donation. Several pages of these invoices include a column, generally located between the donors and the monetary value of the donations, containing page numbers. These represent the page where the donation was recorded in the Book of the Law of the Lord. For those invoice entries lacking a page number, a corresponding entry in the Book of the Law of the Lord can often be found by using the date the donation was recorded or the name of the donor.
The invoice featured here, Invoice No 31, is slightly different than the previous thirty invoices. The earlier invoices vary in length, sometimes listing just a few items and sometimes several pages of items, but they each include a note about when the items in the invoice were delivered to the . It appears that the function of Invoice No 31 changed as it was composed, from an invoice with the intention to accompany delivered goods to more of a running account of goods given or requested by the temple committee throughout the period. There is no indication of a final delivery date, and both loose copies are incomplete and do not match the full list of goods recorded in Trustee-in-Trust Ledger A.

    For example, see the donation of Nicholas W. Empey of a due bill on George Morey. This is listed in the invoice as “Balance on a Note G. Morey & N. W. Empey” without a page in Book of the Law of the Lord. But the same donation is recorded on page 97 of the Book of the Law of the Lord, Book A.
