This likely led to the inscription of “Temple Committee Book A” on the spine of the volume. Some have mistaken this as an indication that this record book belonged to the Nauvoo temple committee; however, these are not temple committee records but rather accounts between the trustee-in-trust office and the Nauvoo temple committee.

While on a mission in England, William Clayton met Sarah Crooks. She was apparently kind and attentive to him, and he grew very attached to her. After JS taught Clayton about plural marriage, Clayton expressed an interest in marrying Sarah Crooks as a plural wife. In March 1843, JS told Clayton that it was “lawful” for him to have her travel to Nauvoo from England, and JS offered to provide the money needed for her passage. Sarah Crooks arrived in Nauvoo on 31 May 1843. While it appears that she was initially willing to marry Clayton as a plural wife, she soon changed her mind and married William Cook on 16 August 1843. (Clayton, Journal, 12 Feb. 1843, 9 Mar. 1843, 31 May 1843, 3 June 1843; Nauvoo Marriage Record, 17 Aug. 1843, 14; see also Ulrich, House Full of Females, 86–89.)
