Tension surfaced between JS and William Smith in late October and erupted again in a mid-December confrontation. Stoddard, the husband of JS’s sister Sophronia, was censured sometime before 7 March 1836, when he made a confession in his elders quorum; on 26 October 1836, his church standing was restored. (See entries for 29, 30, and 31 Oct. 1835; 16, 17, 18, and 19 Dec. 1835; see also Kirtland Elders Quorum, “Record,” 7 Mar. and 26 Oct. 1836.)
