and two or three hours before they were killed— thinks was here when they were killed— dont recollect any thing that was said by or — not positive but thinks he saw in company,— Not positive about but is positive about & — as well as I recollect went down with the guard when they went down to the jail— I was one of the guard— first gun I heard was fired at the jail— if other guns were fired before, I did not See hear them— The mob was gone before we got to the jail— and Smith dead— the mob was then about 200 yards from the jail retreating— the Carthage Grays were on guard— <​were​> all <​armed with the◊​> the◊ guns were loaded— Seven of them were on guard at the Jail— The Grays got together as soon— as they could— and went to the jail— went along with them— did not see on horse back that day— was in a buggy—

Saw & in that day— Saw them before the firing at the Jail— saw 15 or 20 minutes or 1/2 hour at before the firing— took his dinner there— saw when we were on our march up to the Jail— The Carthage Grays were ahead of us— ours was a company under the Command of — did not go at with the Grays— [p. 10]
