Less than three months earlier, on 10 August 1835, JS brought charges against Cahoon in a high council meeting for having “failed to do his duty in correcting his children, and instructing them in the way of truth & righteousness.” The council agreed with the charges, and Cahoon “confessed the correctness of the decision, and promised to make public acknowledgement before the church.” (Minute Book 1, 10 Aug. 1835.)

Peixotto, a public health advocate of national prominence, had revised George Gregory’s medical textbook, Elements of the Theory and Practice of Physic, and had recently moved from New York City to become a professor at the newly established Willoughby Medical College in Willoughby, Ohio—the only institution for regular medical training in the Western Reserve—where he taught general medicine and obstetrics.
