4 January 1844 • Thursday
Thursday Janua[r]y 4. 1844 At home. another Tempest in a tea pot.— about nothing at all. thought somebody had concluded he was the Brutus or doe head [doughhead]. made affidavit that W S. Warren Smith had said something about. & . se[e] affidavit.
took dinner in the North room, I was remarki[n]g to what a kind provident wife I had. that when I wanted a little bread and milk she would load the table with so many good things it would destroy my appetite. at this moment came in and in continuation of the conve[r]sation said. You must do as Buonaparte [Bonaparte] did have a little table, just big <​large​> enough for youslf [yourself] and your order theron. replied, “Mr Smith is a bigger man than Bunaparte he can never eat without his fri[e]nds.”
I remarked that is the wisets [wisest] thing I ever he[a]rd you say—— [p. [223]]
