The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

William Clayton’s report of JS’s address helps clarify this point: “When speaking of the passage ‘I will send Elijah the prophet &c’ he said it should read and he shall turn the hearts of the children to the covenant made with their fathers Also where it says and they shall seal the servants of God in their foreheads &c it means to seal the blessing on their heads meaning the everlasting covenant thereby making their calling & election sure When a seal is put upon the father and mother it secures their posterity so that they cannot be lost but will be saved by virtue of the covenant of their father.” Martha Jane Knowlton Coray and Franklin D. Richards used similar language in their accounts of this sermon. (Clayton, Journal, 13 Aug. 1843, underlining in original; Richards, Scriptural Items, Aug. 1843; Coray, Notebook, “Sermon 3thd.”)
