iber, and now, whereas said committee (composed of Daniel Shearer, Ralph Cox, and David Juda) have made a report which I consider very unjust and oppressive and intolerable, contrary to most positive testimony, both oral and written, and which I consider setting a precident dangerous if imitated and subversive of the rights and liberties of free men, and deciples of our Lord and Saviour; I, therefore, appeal to your Sacred quorum to take unto reconsideration the above; refered to matter of complaint; and also to call to account the above named committee for reporting such a harsh and uncalled for decree, contrary to all known and justly established usages of law and equity in civilized nations and the subscriber as in duty bound will ever pray for the salvation of men.

The above appeal having been not attended to by the then existing Presidency of , for a <​number​> of causes the above appeal is made to the present Presiding for their investigaton
August 11 1838. John Patten.”
After which the report of the above committee was read by the Clerk, as follows:
“To the President Council and quorum of Elders in Zion, assembled in ;
We, the undersigned, being appointed a committee to attend at the house of John Patten, to hear and investigate the cause of complaint, that was lodged before this quorum by David Framton against John Patten, beg leave to, and do, report that we did attend to that duty, and found John Patten and Sheffield Daniels, and Abigail Daniels under transgression and are of the opinion that they ought not to be admitted to the Sacrament untill there is a better understanding [p. 155]
